Hydrogen generators (H2)

A hydrogen generator (H2) produces and dissolves molecular hydrogen in an electrolysis chamber, just like a water ionizer. The difference between them is the membrane. New technologies in hydrogen generators use special proton exchange membranes (PEMs), as opposed to ion exchange membranes used in water ionizers. This is the technical part.

Proponents of hydrogen generators make everything sound complex and new, but this type of membrane has been around for some time. It is widely used by researchers in the automotive industry who want to obtain electricity from hydrogen. Hydrogen generators work the other way around: they use electricity to create hydrogen. Leaving aside the technical terms, things are pretty simple.

One difference of the new technology is that it does not depend on the alkaline mineral content of tap water to create hydrogen. Another difference is that the new generators create hydrogen without increasing the pH, which means that the device creates water with hydrogen but without creating alkaline water.

Unfortunately, some of the promoters of hydrogen generators exaggerate a lot when they claim the superiority of hydrogen generators over water ionizers. They are very critical of water ionizers, which in the end were the first to give us the opportunity to drink hydrogen water, while hydrogen generators had not yet been invented.

Are hydrogen generators โ€œfar superiorโ€ to water ionizers? All water ionizers? We donโ€™t believe that.

Even though our Ionpia H2 hydrogen generator consistently produces high concentrations of molecular hydrogen (H2) on a variety of water sources, on many water sources and a traditional water ionizer (especially the new advanced H2 series from Alkaviva) it performs just as well. First of all, the water must be clean

The increased number of contaminants in tap water is not new. Alkaviva has spent years perfecting its patented US-made UltraWater filtration technology. How much molecular hydrogen (H2) does it produce?

The vast majority of research done over the past 30 years on the benefits of ionized alkaline water has been done on water produced by an electric water ionizer.

One leg saved from amputation caused by arteritis

Recently, one of our customers was kind enough to share with us how alkaline water helped him get rid of a big problem.

โ€œI am writing these lines both for my friends on Facebook and for the multitude of patients who suffer from diabetes and implicitly from obliterating arteritis, and who, sooner or later, reach stents mounted in the coronary, iliac, subclavian arteries, or worse, at the amputation of the lower limbs.

I retired in 2002 after a heart attack and since then the troubles (medical problems) have continued.

The effects of diabetes on blood vessels

Due to the insulin-deficient diabetes detected in the โ€™90s, in the period 2002-2005 I had 3 surgeries (for both of my feet) by which my arteries were replaced (due to massive atheroma deposits) with femoral-popliteal vascular prostheses (by-passes), on the right leg twice.

In 2011 the bypass of the right leg began to close (by atheroma deposition) which brought the stenosis of the arteries below the knee (tibial and peroneal) closer to 100%. Having major problems with coronary arteries, the doctors refused to change my right leg bypass (it would have been the third time) and recommended that I take a daily infusion of โ€œvasaprostanโ€ (an expensive drug and which was distributed through CNAS with special approval), for 30 days, the procedure being considered (then) as a means of saving the foot from amputation.

In my case this procedure (vasaprostan infusions) proved to have the effect of rubbing with โ€œGalenicaโ€ on an acacia leg. As the number of infusions increased, the pain in the sole of the foot grew greater and the foot was always cold.

I informed my doctor several times about the evolution of the disease (unbearable pain and cold leg) but not only did he not notice me but he did not even take a strain on my leg. For understandable reasons, I wonโ€™t give his name.

After 20 days of infusions, one morning after I woke up, I saw that my toes were black and suppurating. I had gangrene.

I called the emergency room and the doctor on duty at the vascular surgery department (being a day off) refused to admit me on the grounds that they did not cut fingers and recommended the emergency staff to notify the surgery department for amputation.

I went to Bucharest and was admitted to the University Emergency Hospital at the vascular surgery clinic.

On December 6, 2011, my toes were amputated on my right foot. Because gangrene continued, on December 9, I underwent a new metatarsal amputation and my vascular prosthesis was replaced with a saphenous vein harvested from the amputated leg.

On December 12, I had a heart attack and was admitted to intensive care. On December 15, I had a cardiac arrest and was intubated โ€ฆ I was intubated for several days in a state of unconsciousness, during which time my lungs were aspirated several times a day.

After being discharged from intensive care I was admitted to cardiology and after a while I started coughing harder and harder. I was treated for bronchitis until I was discharged from the hospital.

The cough continued after discharge and eventually I arrived again in the emergency room in Constanศ›a, at the ENT department, where it was found that due to the aspiration maneuvers from intensive care, after cardiac arrest, my trachea was injured, which led to the appearance of an outgrowth that eventually almost blocked my trachea.

In June 2013, 5 stents were implanted in my coronary arteries at Fundeni Hospital.

In September 2013 (unlucky year) the amputated leg pain started again, being forced to accept a new amputation this time above the knee.

Eventually, in September, I had three successive amputations of my right leg.

After the third amputation, I went home with half of the strands from the stump unscathed and my foot swaying in the amputation area. After another month of treatment at home, a nurse managed to heal my abutment.

After 3 years, the left leg has the same problems

Starting with the spring of last year, my left leg, which I have had a femur-popliteal prosthesis since 2004 (they are guaranteed for 5-6 years), started to hurt and swell, the situation getting worse at the beginning of 2017, with all the medicines, the ointments and massages (including lymphatic) that have been given to me and done all this time.

In February 2017 I had a vascular/arterial Doppler examination which showed that the bypass has a stenosis of 70%, that the anterior tibial is occluded, the posterior tibial has 98% occlusion and the peroneal artery also has 98% occlusion.

Finally, the cardiologist who did the Doppler exam, probably to encourage me, told me that in 2-3 weeks I will reach the amputation of my left leg and showed me where to amputate itโ€ฆ

In the meantime, I was scheduled for hospitalization at the University Emergency Hospital of Bucharest and on May 12, 2017, I had arteriography that showed that the aorta and iliac axis are permeable, femoropopliteal bypass is permeable and the leg trunk is permeable.

Arteriography is an invasive investigation of the arteries and remains the most significant in the analysis of blood circulation, measurements, and images being made from inside the arteries.

Wellnessist note: the two tests mentioned above (CT scan and arteriography) show that the blood vessels that were previously closed in a proportion of up to 98% have now become permeable between 30-50%, so the blood can circulate again. This article is the first in a series in which you will find several ways to clean your ionizer. The first method, the one in this article, is the cheapest for you, so I recommend it to you before the others. It is easy to do and below you have detailed instructions.

Why do I have to clean the ionizer?

Alkaviva ionizers have the best electrode self-cleaning systems. However, no matter how efficient the self-cleaning system is, small mineral deposits can appear in the electrolysis chamber over time. If these deposits exceed a certain threshold, the performance of your ionizer will decrease.

In order for your ionizer to maintain its pH, ORP and Hydrogen performance over time, it needs from time to time a single maintenance operation on your part: periodic cleaning.

Also in any ionizer there are other areas where mineral deposits can appear over time. These accumulations of minerals can reduce the flow of alkaline water or even completely clog the inner pipes of the ionizer, which can cause the appliance to block.

How often should I clean the ionizer?

Depending on the level of hardness of your water source, accumulation usually does not become a problem for at least 8-24 months of use.

In Romania, on average, a cleaning of the ionizer once every 12 months is sufficient.

If you live in an area with extremely hard water, you may need to clean the ionizer every 6 months.

How do I know when to clean the ionizer?

Ideally, clean your ionizer once a year, best when changing filters. If you prefer to clean it more often or less often, see below how you can tell that the ionizer needs cleaning.

Caution: if you choose to clean the ionizer less than once every 12 months, there is a risk of losing the warranty if the appliance fails due to mineral deposits.

The ionizer should be cleaned when mineral deposits become visible and exceed certain limits, or when the flow of alkaline water decreases.

Check the mineral deposits in your ionizer

1. Ionizers mounted above the kitchen worktop: Vesta H2, Athena H2, Melody II, Vesta GL 988, Athena JS 205, Orion JP 109, Melody / Isis JP104, Venus JP 107, Microlite, Neptune, or any other type of ionizer mounted on the countertop.

Remove the stainless steel hose and inspect both ends for signs of any white residue that may have accumulated inside the hose. This residue appears as a white crust on the inside of the hose. The appearance of this white ring is a clear sign of excessive mineral accumulation. If the white ring is thicker than 2 mm, the appliance needs cleaning.

Most of the time, it is enough to check the flexible stainless hose to see if the ionizer needs to be cleaned. There are other areas that you can check, and that you can find in the article Does my ionizer have mineral deposits?

Note: If your ionizer is mounted under the countertop and you use a control valve (Undersink Kit), check for mineral deposits where the hose through which the alkaline water passes connects to the ionizer. Mineral deposits are not always visible at the tap.

2. Ionizers mounted under the countertop: Delphi or UltraDelphi

Inspect the end of the faucet through which the alkaline water flows. If you notice mineral deposits on the tip of the tap, it means that there are mineral deposits in the whole ionizer. Delphi has a 5/16 โ€hose that runs from the ionizer to the computerized control valve. Disconnect the 5/16 โ€hose and put it in vinegar overnight to soften and remove salt deposits.

Cleaning procedure

The safest way to clean the appliance is to circulate vinegar through the ionizer, using a small aquarium pump or a small garden pump.

The best time to clean the ionizer is when you are ready to replace the filter or filters of your ionizer. If you intend to clean the ionizer before the next change of filters, it is good to keep a set of spent filters for re-use at the next cleaning.

1. Prepare the necessary tools

To clean the ionizer you need:

What I call the aquarium pump below you will find at pet supply stores under the name of aquarium filter.

Buy 2 liters of vinegar, preferably white vinegar, obtained by distillation, with 9 degrees.

You will use the bowl to put the vinegar and the aquarium pump in it. It can be any vessel: saucepan, glass or plastic bowl, a PET container, etc.

You can clean the ionizer without old filters, but itโ€™s easier that way.

2. Put the stainless steel flexible hose in the vinegar overnight (optional)

Remove the stainless steel flexible hose from the ionizer. On most models, the stainless hose is removed by unscrewing. At the Vesta GL988 ionizer, the stainless hose is removed by pulling on it, without rotating it.

Put it in a bowl with vinegar, preferably in an upright or oblique position. If you put it lying horizontally, the time required for cleaning will be much longer. A 2-2.5L PET with a cut top is a perfect container. You will need to give the flexible stainless hose a spiral shape to fit.

Washing and preparing the stainless hose will speed up the cleaning process, but if it does not have very large salt deposits in it, you can skip this step.

3. Prepare the ionizer for cleaning

3.1. Unplug the ionizer

3.2 If you do not have a set of old filters in the device, remove the filters from the device and cover with a sponge or silicone plug the hole where the top of the filters is connected to the device (for models in the JP and Vesta GL range), or the holes in the ionizer where the filters are connected (to Melody II, Athena H2 and Vesta H2).

If you have old filters in your device, skip this step.

The area where the plug is to be placed, at the JP range ionizers or at the Vesta GL. The plug is placed on both sides, at the ionizers with two filters.

4. Connect the gray acid water hose of the ionizer to the pump

The gray acid water hose of your ionizer must be connected to the outlet of the aquarium pump. Depending on the type of aquarium pump you bought, you will need to find the best way to connect the hose to the pump.

Most of the time, the acid water hose is a little thicker than the outlet of the aquarium pump, and it is enough to thin it a little with a cutter or knife, after which it will enter a little forced into the outlet nozzle of the pump.

Below you can see how I prepared the gray acid water hose for connection to an aquarium pump.

If your hose is thinner than the pump outlet nozzle, you can find a way to increase the diameter of the hose, either by putting a few layers of insulating tape on the hose or finding a small piece of a thicker hose, with which wear the end of the acid water hose.

Whatever your situation, when connecting the hose to the pump the connection must be tight/tight enough so that the pump pushes the vinegar through the hose and not next to it.

You can use the filter for the whole aquarium, or you can just take the pump out of it and use it only. Usually the pump is at the top of the filter and comes off the filter body very easily. In the image above I only used the pump, without the rest of the aquarium filter body.

5. Put the pump in the vinegar bowl and create the circuit

5.1. Bring the bowl of white vinegar to the ionizer

5.2. Place the aquarium pump with the ionic acid water hose connected to it in the vinegar bowl. The vinegar must completely cover the pump.

5.3. Install the flexible stainless hose to the ionizer. If you have already cleaned the flexible stainless hose, now install it in its place.

5.4. Position the end of the flexible stainless hose over the vinegar bowl. You should now have a circuit like the one below.

6. Start the pump and activate the cleaning process

Plug the aquarium pump plug. The pump will start and start pumping the vinegar into the ionizer through the gray hose of acidic water.

Soon, the vinegar should flow through the stainless hose back into the vessel where the pump is located. If this does not happen, sometimes you will need to put your mouth in the end of the stainless hose and draw air from it until the pump starts and the vinegar starts to flow into the vessel.

If the level of vinegar in the bowl drops a lot, top it up.

As the vinegar passes through the ionizer, it will dissolve the mineral deposits in the appliance. Smaller or larger pieces of white salts will begin to flow into the bowl, which shows that the cleaning process is working.

Allow the pump to run and the vinegar to flow through the appliance for about 2.5 hours.

If the flow of vinegar stops along the way, it is possible that certain pieces of salt detached from the appliance have blocked some narrower areas. Unplug the pump, blow through the stainless hose to unlock the circuit, and then plug the pump back in. The circuit will start again.

7. Stop the pump and reconnect the ionizer to the water source

7.1. After 2.5 hours of non-stop operation of the aquarium pump, prepare 2-3 liters of tap water.

7.2. With the pump running, move the end of the stainless steel hose over another bowl or over the sink. The pump will push the vinegar out of the ionizer without it returning to the vessel. When there is almost no vinegar in the vessel in which the pump is, add to the vessel the 2-3 liters of water you have prepared and let the pump push the water through the ionizer and clear it of vinegar.

7.3. When the pump has run out of water from the vessel, stop the pump and remove it from the vessel. Disconnect the acid water hose from the pump and put its end back in the sink.

7.4. If you removed the filters and put plugs in, remove the plugs and put the filters back in place. Be careful not to insert the filters without removing the plugs! You can clog the appliance.

7.5. Place the end of the stainless hose over the sink

7.6. If you have disconnected the ionizer from the water mains, reconnect it. Let the water flow through the ionizer for 10 minutes, without plugging it in.

7.7. Remove the old filters and install the new filters

7.8. Rinse the aquarium pump thoroughly under running water and then dry it before storing it until the next use. Rinsing and drying the pump before storage is important, because otherwise you risk that the pump will only work after a few cleanings and then break down.

7.9. Connect the ionizer to the outlet and start using it again. You have successfully completed the ionizer cleaning procedure. Congratulations!

Note only for Delphi or UltraDelphi ionizer owners:

For Delphi or UltraDelphi countertop ionizers, both the ionizer itself, the control valve, and the hoses that carry alkaline and acidic water from the ionizer body to the control valve must be cleaned:

The control valve must be cleaned separately. One way to clean the faucet is to remove it from the countertop by unscrewing the retaining nut, and then filling the inner hoses of the faucet with white vinegar with a syringe. After filling the inner hoses with white vinegar, allow the vinegar to act for at least 3 hours.

Cleaning the hoses between the ionizer and the control valve by disconnecting them and inserting vinegar inside them. After making sure that the hoses are full of vinegar, let the vinegar work for at least 3 hours.

Is hydrogen safe?

Yes. Hydrogen gas has been shown to be very safe in concentrations hundreds of times higher than those used in therapy. Here are some examples:

Hydrogen safety was first proven in the late 1800s, when hydrogen was used to locate gunshot wounds. Reports have shown that there are no toxic effects on even the most sensitive tissues.

Another good example of hydrogen safety is that hydrogen is used (in very high concentrations) in deep diving since 1943, to prevent decompression. Studies have shown that there are no toxic effects of hydrogen, even at high concentrations and pressures (98.87% H2 and 1.26% O2 at 19.1 atm.).

Moreover, hydrogen gas is a naturally occurring element in the body, because after a high-fiber meal, intestinal bacteria can produce liters of hydrogen daily. This is another benefit of eating fruits and vegetables.

In short, hydrogen is a normal element in our body, as opposed to a substance foreign to the body that can only be produced in the laboratory.

Is hydrogen dissolved in water the same as hydrogen gas in water?

The way hydrogen is found in water influences its stability and the speed with which it emerges from the water and dissipates in the air. Hydrogen can exist in water as:

Important: it is not enough to introduce hydrogen gas into the water to obtain a therapeutic water. Hydrogen must be dissolved in water. If the hydrogen is only in the form of gas bubbles, it will come out of the water immediately and dissipate into the atmosphere, and the water you drink will have almost no hydrogen.

The lighter test

An excellent example of undissolved hydrogen can be seen in the so-called โ€œlighter sampleโ€, in which a flame is held close to the alkaline water outlet of a water ionizer. There is a sound like a squeak and small sparks can be seen as the hydrogen coming out of the water ignites.

The problem is that the hydrogen that ignites is just undissolved hydrogen in water, which evaporates immediately into the air, and therefore does not offer you any therapeutic value.

So the sound like a creak, like small crackles heard on the lighter test only shows that hydrogen was produced by electrolysis, but the amount dissolved in water may be below the therapeutic level.

โ€œMilky waterโ€ and gas bubbles

Undissolved hydrogen can also sometimes be seen in some water ionizers when the water looks โ€œmilkyโ€ or โ€œfoggyโ€ due to large bubbles of hydrogen gas. So, just because a water looks milky or just because you see a lot of bubbles in the water doesnโ€™t mean that the water has a high concentration of molecular hydrogen. In fact, the concentration of dissolved molecular hydrogen may even be below the detectable or therapeutic level.

Water ionizers were designed decades before the importance of hydrogen was known. That is why they were designed to produce alkaline water and not dissolved hydrogen water. In fact, some ionizers can produce water with very high alkalinity, but without detectable amounts of hydrogen.

Other water ionizers can produce a good level of hydrogen when the electrodes and their pipes are clean, but after salt deposits appear inside them, the hydrogen concentration can fall below the detectable level. The duration until these deposits appear can be a few days, weeks or months, depending on the water source and how much the ionizer is used.

This emphasizes how important regular cleaning of the ionizer is, and the performance of its self-cleaning system. Each type of ionizer has a recommended period at which manual cleaning must be done. The more advanced the self-cleaning system of the ionizer, the less often it needs to be cleaned.

In conclusion, of all the molecular hydrogen produced by an ionizer, the only thing that matters to you is the amount of dissolved hydrogen. The higher the amount of dissolved hydrogen in relation to the total amount of hydrogen produced by the apparatus, the more efficient the apparatus is. Thus, if a system (water ionizer, hydrogen generator) were perfectly optimized, you should not see hydrogen bubbles in the water or hear sounds in the lighter test.

The presence of bubbles and sound in the lighter test does not mean that the water contains a high concentration of hydrogen. It also does not mean that the water does not contain hydrogen or contains a low concentration. These symptoms simply say nothing about how much hydrogen is dissolved in water, which is the only thing that matters to you.

How much hydrogen water do you need to drink to get health benefits?

This is the question that researchers are asking themselves and is still being investigated. Doses between 0.5 and 1.6 mg of hydrogen per day have been used in human and animal studies to date, and these doses have shown statistically significant benefits.

If your water has a hydrogen concentration of 1 ppm (equivalent to 1 mg / L), then two liters a day will give you a dose of 2 mg of hydrogen (H2). These doses are simply what has been shown to have effects in studies so far. For some people and for certain effective doses they may be higher or lower.

If we look at it from another point of view, we see that the waters of world-famous healing springs such as Nordenau (Germany), Lourdes (France), Tlacote (Mexico), Nadana (India), Hita Tenryosui, Japan, have hydrogen concentrations. molecular weight (H2) dissolved in water between 0.2 and 0.8 ppm. These concentrations and even higher concentrations can be obtained at home using a water ionizer or a hydrogen generator.

Does more hydrogen mean more benefits?

Maybe yes, maybe no โ€ฆ There is obviously a minimum amount of hydrogen needed to get health benefits. This amount may also vary from person to person.

It is important to know that you cannot have a problem because you have consumed too much hydrogen. It does not accumulate in the body, so you will simply exhale the hydrogen that your body does not need. In many cases a clear dependence of the effect on the dose size was observed, so the more hydrogen was administered the stronger the effects.

There are also unproven claims that a higher amount of hydrogen offers greater benefits. But more research is still needed in this area for a well-documented answer.

Is hydrogen gas not immediately lost from the water?

Yes, hydrogen starts to come out of the water immediately, but it doesnโ€™t suddenly disappear from the water. Depending on the size of the water contact surface with the air, the degree of agitation of the water, etc., the hydrogen can stay in the water for a few hours or more before its concentration drops below the therapeutic level.

Hydrogen water is similar in behavior to carbon dioxide (CO2) carbonated water, which does not come out of the water when you open the bottle. Gradually, however, carbon dioxide comes out of the water and after a while the water is no longer carbonated, so it is better to drink the water before it becomes flat. Exactly the same happens with hydrogen water, which instead of dissolved carbon dioxide has dissolved hydrogen.

How long does molecular hydrogen (H2) remain in water?

Just like when you open a dose of acidic juice, as soon as the water with molecular hydrogen (H2) is left in the open air at normal atmospheric pressure, the hydrogen concentration decreases until it reaches equilibrium with the partial pressure of hydrogen in the atmosphere, which which means a concentration of H2 in water of 8.67 x 10-7 mg / L.

Because hydrogen is the smallest molecule in the universe, it is able to diffuse through all plastic containers and many other types of containers. Therefore, hydrogen has the highest effusion rate of all gases.

The rate of separation and dissipation of molecular hydrogen (H2) from water is directly proportional to temperature, liquid agitation, and air contact surface.

A 500 ml container of hydrogen peroxide, discovered, has a half-life of about 2 hours. In other words, if we leave the container with a water with a concentration of H2 of 1.6 mg / l, discovered in the open air, at room temperature, without stirring the water, the concentration of molecular hydrogen (H2) in the water will be approximately 0 , 8 mg / l after two hours. However, the dissipation rate is not exactly linear.

Is there a direct link between ORP and the concentration of molecular hydrogen (H2) in the water?

Important: Even if you have water with a high negative ORP, this does not mean that that water also has a large amount of dissolved hydrogen. You can have a water with an ORP of -700 mV that has more than 1 ppm of hydrogen or less than 0.05 ppm of hydrogen.

How much hydrogen can be dissolved in water?

The concentration of hydrogen gas (H2) is often reported in moles (moles / liter (M) or millimoles / liter mM), parts per million (ppm), parts per billion (ppb), or milligrams per liter (mg / l ). In dilute solutions, 1 ppm is approximately equal to 1 mg / l and therefore usually the two units are used interchangeably. In the scientific literature, the concentration of 1.6 mg / l (1.6 ppm or 1600 ppb) is considered the โ€œsaturationโ€ concentration, as this would be the concentration that would be reached in water if the atmosphere were composed only of hydrogen, and would have atmospheric pressure at sea level, which is 760 mm column of mercury (1.01 bar), ie 1 atmosphere (atm).
