What is a hydrogenated water generator
A hydrogenated water generator is a device that produces hydrogenated water, i.e. water with dissolved molecular hydrogen. We talked at length about hydrogenated water and its benefits in the article Hydrogenated water and its benefits for your health.
Why the hydrogenated water generator appeared
In the last ten years, more than 600 studies have been done that have shown the effectiveness of hydrogen therapy in the treatment of a large number of diseases.
Hydrogenated water generators have emerged because people have sought to find various ways to produce hydrogenated water, and to test whether there are differences between hydrogenated waters obtained in different ways. Along with water ionizers, which have already been established and known for several decades, hydrogenated water generators are beginning to become more and more known and used in recent years.
The technology of a hydrogenated water generator
Hydrogenated water generators produce hydrogen dissolved in water by electrolysis, just like water ionizers. However, the electrolysis chamber of a hydrogenated water generator is different from that of an ionizer.
The technology for the electrolysis chamber of hydrogen generators comes from hydrogen batteries for the automotive industry, only it is used not to produce electricity from hydrogen, but to produce hydrogen from electricity and water.
If there is an electron exchange membrane in a water ionizer in the electrolysis chamber between the electrodes, there is a proton exchange membrane in a hydrogenated water generator in the electrolysis chamber.
The electrolysis cell of a hydrogenated water generator is composed of:
- Two electrodes โ anode and cathode
- proton exchange membrane. This is an electrolyte made of a solid polymer material (SPE).
- Schematic of an electrolysis chamber in a hydrogenated water generator.
One of the characteristics of the electrolysis cells of hydrogenated water generators is that some models have a limited lifespan, at least at this time. Depending on the model and type of appliance, a hydrogenated water generator electrolysis chamber may take:
- for portable hydrogenated water generators, 3-10 years depending on the model;
- to hydrogenated water generators connected to the water network, from several thousand liters of water (7000 to one of the models we studied), up to several years.
Types of hydrogenated water generator
Hydrogenated water generator connected to the water network
Hydrogenated water generator connected to the IonPia H2 water network
This is a type of hydrogenated water generator that connects to the water network and produces water with hydrogen instantly when turned on. No need to wait, just turn on the appliance and the hydrogenated water starts to flow.
Some grid-connected hydrogenated water generator models have built-in filters to filter water from contaminants before hydrogen is introduced into it. Others do not have filters, but you can connect an external filter before them if you wish.
Portable hydrogenated water generator
This is a type of small hydrogenated water generator that you can easily take with you to the office, gym or travel. It usually works on a rechargeable battery.
It consists of a small body, which contains the electrolysis chamber and the battery and a container in which the water to be enriched with hydrogen is placed. In other models, the electrolysis cell and the container are connected to each other.
After you put water in the container press a button and the generator starts to produce hydrogen, which dissolves in the water. You have to wait 3-5 minutes for an operating cycle, after which the appliance switches off automatically and you can drink freshly produced hydrogenated water.
After a few uses (5-10), you need to plug in the device to recharge its battery.
Some models even allow you to mount a plastic can or a threaded bottle instead of their container. This way you only have to carry the hydrogen generator body with you. You can easily find bottles anywhere. Hereโs what a hydrogen generator with a mounted glass looks like.
Spa hydrogenated water generator
It is a variant of a portable hydrogen generator, which is designed to produce hydrogen water for external use, which you can use to wash your face or even your whole body.
There are also variants that you can introduce in the water in the bathtub in which you take a bath to transform the water in the bathtub into hydrogenated water.
Spray type hydrogenated water generator
Do you want to have a small container with hydrogenated water with which to refresh your face from time to time? There is a variant of hydrogenated water generator for this as well. Itโs a small portable hydrogenated water generator with a small container and built-in sprayer.
Similarities and differences between a hydrogenated water generator and a water ionizer
Hydrogen generators are one of the ways in which hydrogen dissolved in water can be obtained, as are water ionizers. There are similarities and differences between hydrogen generators and water ionizers, and we will discuss them further.
We have already shown the similarity between a hydrogenated water generator and a water ionizer: both electrolyze water, and in this process a quantity of hydrogen appears in the water.
The difference between a hydrogenated water generator and a water ionizer is that the hydrogenated water generator does not change the pH of the water. The hydrogenated water generator produces ionized and hydrogenated water, but does not produce alkaline water.
For more clarity, see the table below:
โGenerator apฤ hidrogenatฤ | โIonizator de apฤ | |
โpH | โNeutral (7-7,5) | โAlkaline(7,5 โ 11) |
โORP | โNegative (-1 โ -600 mV) | โNegative (-1 โ -800 mV) |
Dissolved H2 | โYes | Yes (quantity depends a lot on the model) |
In conclusion:
A water ionizer produces water: alkaline, negatively ionized, and dissolved hydrogen. The amount of dissolved hydrogen produced by a water ionizer differs greatly from model to model, however. If you choose a water ionizer, make sure you choose one that is optimized to produce as much dissolved hydrogen as possible. The lighter test, which you can learn more about in the article Frequently Asked Questions about Molecular Hydrogen Therapy, is not relevant to the amount of dissolved hydrogen.
A hydrogenated water generator produces water: negatively ionized and dissolved hydrogen. Hydrogenated water generators usually produce good amounts of hydrogen dissolved in water, because their electrolysis chamber is specially designed for this.
Another difference between a hydrogenated water generator and a water ionizer is that the hydrogenated water generator can produce hydrogen dissolved in water even from a water purified by reverse osmosis, so that it has almost no salts dissolved in it. Water ionizers need a water with a high enough salt content to make the water ionize.
Hydrogenated water generator or water ionizer? What to choose?
The answer is nuanced and depends on your preferences. If you are mainly interested in hydrogenated water, you can take either type of appliance (if you make sure that the ionizer you buy is designed to produce a quantity of dissolved hydrogen comparable to that produced by a hydrogenated water generator , which not every ionizer model can).
If, in addition to hydrogen water, you want to take into account other elements when choosing, I recommend you read the article: Water Ionizer? Hydrogen generator? You decide.
